Merry Christmas to All

A few years ago I bought this tree at the “Festival of Trees” event in Sheboygan. I loved that event because it raised money for local charities and offered so many beautiful Christmas items as well as trees to bid on. It was a great fundraiser and I am sorry that it no longer exists. The appeal of this particular tree was the nostalgic feeling I got when I thought about the type of Christmas celebrated by the Ingalls family in the era of ”The Little House on the Prairie”. There were no malls with Black Friday discounts, complete with pepper spray and tents in parking lots. Instead families talked about and prepared to celebrate the birth of Jesus. They may have strung popcorn on the tree, collected pine cones from the yard, or used whatever other small ornaments they could find. Their gifts were hand made and came from the heart. All gathered to share simple meals and kind words.

One of the things we do at Falls Firehouse Pizza is to offer a place for families to re-connect at holiday time if they prefer not to cook and entertain at home. It is my hope that your holiday time is filled with the spirit of family time and cherished friendships, whether you gather at home or here.

We will be closed on Dec. 24th and Dec. 25th as well as Jan 1st so that our employees can also celebrate with their families. My very best wishes to all for a blessed and meaningful Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.

What is a more appropriate time than Thanksgiving to thank our employees for taking such good care of our guests?

I will begin to introduce them via this blog, so you get to know them, even if they are not in the front of the house.
So today I introduce my soup chef, Carol Shroll, who has been a part of Firehouse Pizza for more than 22 years. Now when you are enjoying your delicious soup, you know who to thank. Here’s Carol in the kitchen just a few feet from the 6 burner stove she uses to create her soups.

Incidentally, when Carol goes on vacation, the soup is made by an employee with even longer service. Kay Grauman, who also happens to be my sister, was one of the original 6 employees at Firehouse. She managed the restaurant, along with Betty Zimmerman when we opened in 1987. Although she has since retired, she fills in as soup maker and dessert maker when we need a hand. Incidentally, she also continues to roll out the pastry crust for all the pies we serve. So now you’ve heard about 2 of our crew – only 33 more to go !

One of the best things we can do to get our economy back on track is to shop local. The local business base helps keep property taxes down.
With the price of gasoline, it makes sense to shop close to home. Think of the businesses you would be sorry to see closed and vow to shop or dine there more often.
Think of which businesses sponsor your children’s soccer or baseball teams and thank them with your patronage. Think of the dollars these businesses give back through donations to fund raisers and schools. The best way to show your appreciation is to shop with them instead of heading to the chains and big box stores.

We are fortunate to have a very loyal customer base at Firehouse Pizza, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Our doors are open because you care. We will continue to give you the best value and personal service we can because you deserve our best every day.
Everyone has choices – thanks for choosing Firehouse Pizza.

Those who know me well, understand my hesitance to join the growing trend of an online presence. I’ve been too busy talking to my customers, friends, and employees face to face to want to sit at a keyboard to communicate. Our world has certainly changed since the days I sat at a desk every day punching holes in cards that would be fed into a huge main frame computer. But that was 1966 and today is 2011, so I guess it’s time for me to embrace technology. It is, after all, where I started my work experience all those years ago.

I hope you will enjoy browsing our menu on line, but don’t expect on line ordering from this “old fashioned” grandma. What I can promise you is great food, in historically interesting buildings, served and prepared by friendly, talented people. I hope something on this web site entices you to dine at Firehouse Pizza soon. Don’t forget to ask for me. I love to see new faces.
